<p>The melting point of plastic is the temperature at which a solid plastic material changes from a solid state to a molten state. <h2>Plastic Injection Molding Processing Conditions</h2>

<p><strong>ABS </strong>(full name: acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)</p>
<p><strong>Baking: </strong>ABS is hygroscopic and needs to be dried before processing.<br />
<strong>ABS Drying temperature:</strong> 80 – 90 C (176 – 195 F)<br />
<strong>ABS Drying time:</strong> minimum 2 hours. Material moisture content should be less than 0.1%<br />
<strong>ABS Melt temperature:</strong> 200 – 280 C (392 – 536 F); Target: 230°C (446°F)<br />
<strong>ABS Mold temperature:</strong> 25 – 80 degrees Celsius (77 – 176 degrees Fahrenheit). (Mold temperature controls gloss; lower mold temperatures produce lower gloss)<br />

<p><strong>Chemical and physical properties</strong><br />
ABS is made from a combination of three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Each monomer imparts different properties: acrylonitrile for hardness, chemical resistance and heat resistance; styrene for processability, gloss and strength; butadiene for toughness and impact resistance. Morphologically speaking, ABS is an amorphous material.</p>
<p>The polymerization of three monomers produces a terpolymer with two phases: a continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and a dispersed phase of polybutadiene rubber. The performance of ABS is affected by the monomer ratio and the two-phase molecular structure. This allows for great flexibility in product design, so there are hundreds of grades available on the market. Commercially available grades have different properties, such as medium to high impact, low to high surface gloss, and high thermal distortion.</p>
<p>ABS offers excellent processability, appearance, low creep and excellent dimensional stability, as well as high impact strength.</p>
<p><strong> ABS Injection Molding Applications </strong><br />
Automotive (dash and interior panels, glove box doors, wheel covers, mirror housings, etc.), refrigerators, small appliance housings and power tool applications (hair dryers, blenders, food processors, lawn mowers, etc.), telephone housings , typewriter casings, typewriter keys, and recreational vehicles such as golf carts and motorboats.</p>

<p>Drying is usually not required if stored properly<br />
<strong>Melt temperature: </strong>220 – 280 C (428 – 536 F); not to exceed 280°C<br />
<strong>Mold temperature:</strong> 20 – 80 C (68 – 176 F); Recommended: 50 C (122 F) Crystallinity level is determined by mold temperature.<br />
<strong>Injection pressure:</strong> up to 180 MPa<br />
<strong>Injection speed:</strong> Generally, fast injection speed is used to minimize internal stress; if surface defects occur, slow molding at higher temperatures is preferred.</p>
<p><strong>Runners and gates</strong><br />
For cold runners, typical diameter range is 4 – 7 mm. It is recommended to use full round gates and runners. All door types can be used. Typical pin gate diameters range from 1 – 1.5 mm, but diameters as small as 0.7 mm can also be used. If edge gates are used, the minimum gate depth should be half the wall thickness and the width should be at least twice the wall thickness. Hot runners can be easily used for PP molding.</p>
<p><strong>Chemical and physical properties</strong><br />
PP is produced by polymerizing propylene using a stereospecific catalyst. Mainly produces isotactic polypropylene (the methyl group is on one side of the carbon chain). This linear plastic is semi-crystalline due to its ordered molecular structure. It is harder than PE and has a higher melting point. PP homopolymer becomes very brittle at temperatures above 0 C (32 F), so many commercial grades are random copolymers containing 1 – 4% ethylene or block copolymers with higher ethylene content. Copolymers have a lower heat deflection temperature (approximately 100 C / 212 F), poor transparency, gloss, and stiffness, but high impact strength. As the proportion of ethylene increases, the material becomes tougher. The Vicat softening point is approximately 150 C (302 F). Due to the high degree of crystallinity, these materials have higher surface hardness and scratch resistance.</p>
<p>PP does not have environmental stress cracking problems. PP is often modified by adding glass fibers, mineral fillers or thermoplastic rubbers. The MFR range of PP is 1 to 40; materials with lower MFR have better impact strength, but lower tensile strength. Copolymers of the same MFR are tougher than homopolymers. Its viscosity is more sensitive to shear and temperature than PE.</p>
<p>Due to the crystallinity, the shrinkage is relatively high (0.018 – 0.025 mm/mm or 1.8 – 2.5%). Shrinkage is more uniform than PE-HD (difference in flow and cross-flow shrinkage is typically less than 0.2%). Adding 30% glass reduces shrinkage to approximately 0.7%.</p>
<p>Both homopolymer and copolymer PP have excellent moisture resistance and good chemical resistance to acids, bases and solvents. But it is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as carbon tetrachloride. Its antioxidant capacity at high temperatures is not as good as PE.</p>
<p><strong>Main Injection Molding Applications:</strong><br />

<p>Drying is usually not required if stored properly.<br />
<strong>HDPE plastic melting temperature range: </strong>180 – 280 C (356 – 536 F); For high molecular weight grades, recommended <strong>HDPE melt temperature range</strong>: 200 – 250 C (392 – 482 F)<br />
<strong>HDPE injection mold temperature range: </strong>20 – 95 C (68 – 194 F)<br />
(Temperatures are higher for wall thicknesses up to 6 mm; temperatures are lower for wall thicknesses greater than 6 mm.) The cooling rate should be uniform to minimize shrinkage changes. For optimal cycle times, the cooling channel diameter should be at least 8 mm and must be within 1.3 d of the mold surface (where “d” is the diameter of the cooling channel).<br />
<strong>HDPE material injection pressure range: </strong>70 – 105 MPa<br />
<strong>Injection Speed:</strong> High injection speeds are recommended; for parts with large surface areas, contour injection speeds can be used to reduce warpage.</p>
<p><strong>HDPE injeciton mold runners and gates designs</strong><br />
The diameter of the flow channels ranges from 4 – 7.5 mm (usually 6 mm). The length of the runner should be as short as possible. All door types can be used. Gate pad length should not exceed 0.75mm. Ideal for hot runner molds; when color changes frequently, insulated hot tip runners are preferred.</p>
<p><strong>HDPE Chemical and physical properties</strong><br />
<strong>High-density polyethylene</strong> is produced by polymerization of ethylene (using lower temperature and pressure conditions compared to the production of low-density polyethylene). The material is not branched, which is achieved through the use of stereospecific catalysts. HDPE has a higher degree of crystallinity (compared to LDPE) due to molecular regularity.</p>
<p>Higher levels of crystallinity contribute to increased density, tensile strength, heat deflection temperature, viscosity, and chemical resistance. high-density polyethylene is more resistant to penetration than LDPE. Impact strength is low. The properties of HDPE are controlled by density and molecular weight distribution. Injection molding grades typically have narrower molecular weight distributions.</p>
<p>Class 1 materials have a density range of 0.91 – 0.925 g/cm^3;<br />
Class 2 materials have a density range of 0.926 – 0.94 g/cm^3;<br />
Class 3 materials have a density range of 0.94 – 0.965 g/cm^3;</p>
<p>The material flows easily and has an MFR range of 0.1 – 28. Higher molecular weights (lower MFR grades) provide better impact resistance.</p>
<p>As a semi-crystalline material, molding shrinkage is high (0.015 – 0.04 mm/mm or 1.5 – 4%). This depends on the degree of orientation and crystallinity of the part (which in turn depends on processing conditions and part design).</p>
<p>PE is susceptible to environmental stress cracking, which can be minimized through proper design and the use of minimum MFR materials at specific density levels to reduce internal stresses. HDPE is soluble in hydrocarbons at temperatures above 60°C but is more resistant to these materials than LDPE.</p>

Our 160 ton <a href="https://guanxin-machinery.com/160-ton-injection-molding-machine/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">small injection molding machine</a> have about 500 kinds parts (more than 1300 pcs parts) on BOM list, but there are 700 kinds parts ( more than 1500 pcs parts) for our <a href="https://guanxin-machinery.com/1000-ton-injection-molding-machine/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">1000 ton injection molding machine</a>.  And it`s with our standard configurations only, there are more if have some other part for different regions and countries used. <p><strong>1st. </strong> The silicone material is supplied by 2 different component A &#038; B is the same quantity with buckets (10KG) or drums (100KG). We put the drums on the platform like plunger and fixed it well. The plunger will inject the liquid silicone to the metering and dosing machine`s metering pump. And then the liquid silicone metering pump will pump these two-part silicone component to the mixing joint in 1:1 ratio. For some colored products it will need a colorant feeding unit to feed the color pigment to this joint as well. After all the liquid silica is join here then it will be feed to a static mixer to make it mixed even. </p>
<p><strong>2nd.</strong> The first grade mixed silicone material will be supplied to the silicone injection mold machine injection screw and barrel. This liquid silicone material we be remixed again here. Just to ensure it`s fully combined even. The silicone injection moulding machine screw and barrel must keep cooled with the cooled water supplied by a water chiller.  Here is one of difference between liquid silicone molding process and  other plastic manufacturing processes.</p>
<p><strong>3rd. </strong>The mixed liquid silicone is wait for injection when it goes to the head of the silicone machine crew. <h2> Designs and Functions of Injection Molding Screws </h2>
<p>1. The overall surface of the three small parts of the screw head must be smooth. Except for the assembly part, there must be no right-angled or acute corners in any place that can be seen from the front. They should be smoothly transitioned. The size of the smooth R depends on the situation, because right-angled and acute corners The dead corners are prone to cracking, not to mention the accumulation of materials, which makes the flow of raw materials not smooth enough. After being used for a long time, it is easy to have black spots and yellowing. The three small parts are the parts most likely to produce yellowing. Many PC, PMMA and other products are used for yellowing. Three small pieces were abnormal and turned yellow.</p>
<p>2. The design of the two end faces of the apron is also particularly important. Nowadays, many injection molding machine manufacturers design the joint surface of the apron and the meson to be flat and have no slope. This has two disadvantages. First, there is plane contact and no slope contact. If the surface is large, the service life will be much shorter than that of the inclined surface. Secondly, the joint between the meson and the screw head without the inclined surface will become a dead angle. If the raw material stays for a long time, there will be black spots and yellowing. This slope is the most 30 degrees is better, 15 degrees is not big enough and it is easy for material to accumulate. 45 degrees has a large contact surface and is not easy to accumulate materials, but it is easy to push through the rubber ring when injecting glue.</p>
<p>3. The left and right movable clearance of the apron should be moderate. Depending on the raw materials produced, the movable clearance should be large or small. The instability of the glue injection point of many large-scale thin-walled products is due to the large left and right movable clearance of the apron. .There are also many PMMA and PC raw materials that make a rattling sound during production because the left and right movement gaps of the rubber rings are too small, resulting in unsmooth discharging.</p>
<p>4. The surface of the threaded part of the screw head does not need to be as hard as other parts. Too high hardness can easily cause the thread to pop off and reduce the thread strength. It should be protected by nitrogen barrier before heat treatment. Or the thread should be processed after nitriding. The threaded part should be withdrawn. It is best for the groove to be an R shape of an arc, rather than being cut directly with a right-angled turning tool. That way the stress is better, as many screw heads break at this location.</p>

<p>As the resin advances further along the feed section, densification (compaction) occurs as the particles or granules are pressed more closely together. The motion of a solid is always enhanced by either increasing the friction between the plastic and the inner surface of the barrel or reducing the friction between the plastic and the screw surface. In other words, if it sticks to the barrel and slides on the screw, the feeding effect is good.</p>

For example, powdered and fluffy regrinds generally cause difficulties in the conveying and processing of plastic raw materials than pellets, cubes and heavier regrinds. <p>L/D ratio = screw working length/screw diameter. If the L/D ratio is large, it is easy to eat the ingredients evenly, but it is easy to overdo it. For plastics with better thermal stability, a longer screw can be used to improve mixing properties without worrying about scorching and yellowing; for plastics with poor thermal stability, a shorter screw can be used or the screw end has no screw tips auxiliary.</p>

<p>Appropriate compression ratio can increase the density of plastic, make the molecules more tightly bonded, help reduce the inhalation of air, reduce the temperature rise caused by pressure, and affect the difference in output. Improper compression Than will destroy the physical properties of plastic.</p>
<p>The higher the compression ratio, the higher the temperature rise generated during the plasticization process of the plastic in the material tube, resulting in better mixing uniformity for the gelling plastic, and the relative discharge volume is greatly reduced. High compression ratio is not suitable for fusible plastics, plastics with low melting viscosity and poor thermal stability.</p>
<p>The small screw has a shallow groove depth and absorbs heat quickly, which is enough to soften the plastic during the compression section. The friction heat energy between the screw and the material tube wall is low, and it is suitable for medium to high-speed rotation to increase the plasticizing capacity.</p>
<p>Large screws are difficult to rotate quickly to avoid uneven plasticization and excessive frictional heat. For plastics with high heat sensitivity, if the injection screw rotates too fast, the plastic will be easily decomposed.</p>

<p>More sensitive to temperature. It has good thermal stability in the normal processing temperature range. It will not decompose for a long time at 300℃, and will start to decompose when it exceeds 340℃. The viscosity is less affected by the screw shear rate.<br />
Strong water absorption.</p>

<p><strong>Nylon (PA)</strong><br />

<p>The following points should be noted for the screw of injection PMMA:</p>
<p>(1) Choose a gradual screw with a length-to-diameter ratio of 20-22, and generally L1=40%L, L2=40%L according to the accuracy requirements of its product molding.<br />
(2) The compression ratio ε is generally selected from 2.3 to 2.6.<br />
(3) Because it has a certain degree of hydrophilicity, a mixing ring structure is adopted at the front end of the screw.<br />
(4) Other parameters can generally be designed according to general-purpose screw. In addition, the gap between the barrels should not be too small.</p>
<p><strong>Polyester (PET)</strong><br />
The characteristics of PET are as follows:</p>
<p>The melting point is 250~260℃, and the molding temperature of blow molding grade PET is a bit wider, 255~290℃.</p>
<p>PET plastic-injection molding<br />
Pay attention to the following points for the screw of injection PET:</p>
<p>(1) L/D is generally taken as 20, three-stage distribution L1= (50%~55%) L, L2=20%L.<br />
(2) Use a screw with low shear and low compression ratio. The compression ratio ε is generally 1.8~2. At the same time, to prevent discoloration or opacity caused by shearing overheating, set hs=0.09D.<br />
(3) There is no mixing zone at the front end of the screw to prevent overheating and material storage.<br />
(4) Because this kind of material is more sensitive to temperature, and general manufacturers tend to use recycled materials. In order to increase production, they generally use low-shear screw. So that the motor speed can be appropriately increased to achieve the goal. At the same time, in the use of recycled materials (most of them are flakes), according to the actual situation, in order to increase the conveying capacity of the feeding section, methods like increasing the diameter of the blanking and slotting in the barrel have been achieved, and relatively good results have been achieved.</p>
<p><strong>Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)</strong><br />
PVC is a heat-sensitive plastic, generally divided into hard and soft. The difference lies in the amount of plasticizer added to the raw material, less than 10% is hard, more than 30% is soft.</p>
<p>The characteristics of PVC:</p>
<p>No obvious melting point, soft at 60℃. Its viscoelastic state is at 100~150℃, melting at 140℃, and decomposing at the same time.Decompose rapidly at 170℃. The softening point is close to the decomposition point, and the decomposition is released in HCl gas.<br />
The disadvantage is poor thermal stability and poor fluidity.<br />
PVC-injection-molding<br />
The following points should be paid attention to for the screw of injection molding PVC:</p>
<p>(1) The screw design should be as low shear as possible to prevent overheating.<br />
(2) The screw and barrel should be corrosion-proof.<br />
(3) Generally speaking, the screw parameters are L/D=16~20, h3=0.07D, e=1.6~2, L1=40%L, L2=40%L.<br />
(4) In order to prevent material accumulation, there is no check ring. And the head taper is 20°~30°, which is more suitable for soft plastic. If the product requirements are higher, a separate screw without metering section can be used, which is more suitable for the High-quality PVC.</p>
<p>And further, in order to cooperate with temperature control, cooling water or oil holes are added to the screw in the feeding section. While the barrel is added with a water cooling or oil cooling system. The temperature control accuracy is about ±2°C.</p>

<p>Screw slippage is one of most seen injection molding errors for an plastic injection molding manufacturer. So knowing what are the screw slippage reasons and treatment of injection molding machines is very important for every plastic injection moulding engineer and factory or workshop manager. </p>
<p>When the injection screw is difficult to press the material at the feeding port, or the length of the barrel cannot form enough adhesion to convey the material, then the screw will slip. In the stage of screw pre-molding, when the screw rotates in the barrel to convey the material along the direction of the screw and retreats to accumulate the material for the next injection, the screw will also slip. If the screw starts to slip during the pre-molding phase, the axial movement of the screw will stop while the screw continues to rotate. Usually the slippage of the screw will cause the material to degrade before injection molding, and there will be product quality problems such as short shots and extended processing cycle.</p>
<p>   Therefore, the reasons for screw slippage are summarized, including: too high back pressure, overheating or overcooling in the second half of the barrel, wear of the barrel or screw, too shallow groove in the feeding section of the screw, improper design of the hopper, lack of material or blockage in the hopper, The resin is wet, the lubricant content in the resin is too high, the particle size of the material is too fine, and the resin used is not cut in a good shape or recycled. </p>
<p><strong>1. Influence of injection molding process parameters </strong></p>
<p><em>  Low temperature in the back section of the barrel is usually the main reason for the slippage of the injection molding screw.</em></p>
<p>The barrel of the <a href="https://guanxin-machinery.com/160-ton-injection-molding-machine/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">plastic injection molding machine</a> is divided into three sections. At the rear of the feeding section, the material forms a thin layer of molten polymer during heating and compression. The molten film layer is attached to the barrel. Without this thin layer, the pellets are difficult to convey forward. The material in the feeding section must be heated to a critical temperature in order to produce the critical molten film layer. Often, however, the residence time of the material in the barrel is too short for the polymer to reach this temperature. The occurrence of this situation may be due to the small scale of the equipment and the corresponding configuration of smaller barrels and screws. Too short a residence time can lead to insufficient melting or mixing of the polymer, which can cause the screw to slip or stall.</p>
<p><strong>2 simple solutions are proposed for this problem: </strong></p>
<p>a). Add a small amount of material from the end of the barrel for cleaning, and check the melting temperature. If the residence time is short, the melt temperature will be lower than the barrel temperature set point.<br />
b). Observe the molded product. If there are marble spots, black spots or light stripes, it means that the material has not been well mixed in the barrel.</p>
<p>And, according to the usage situation, another solution to the screw slippage is analyzed, and the temperature of the feeding section is gradually increased until the screw rotation and retreat are coordinated. Sometimes it is necessary to increase the barrel temperature above the recommended set point to achieve this range. Setting too high a back pressure can also cause the screw to stall or slip. Increasing the back pressure setting also increases the energy going into the material. If the back pressure is set too high, then the screw may not be able to generate enough pressure to convey the melt forward to overcome the back pressure of the back pressure, and the screw will rotate at a certain position without going back, which will do more to the melt The work and significantly increase the melt temperature, thereby adversely affecting product quality and cycle time. The back pressure applied to the melt can be adjusted by the control valve on the injection barrel.</p>
<p><strong>2. The impact of equipment</strong></p>
<p> If the cause of screw slippage is due to processing equipment rather than process parameters, then screw and barrel wear is likely to be the problem.</p>
<p> As in the feed section, the resin adheres to the barrel wall as it melts in the screw compression section. When the screw rotates, the material leaves the barrel wall after being sheared and conveyed forward. If there are wear areas on the screw and barrel, the screw will not be able to move material forward effectively. If wear is suspected, the screw and barrel should be inspected and the clearance between the two checked. If the fit gap between the screw and the barrel exceeds the standard value, replacement or repair work should be started.</p>
<p> The design parameters of the screw, especially the compression ratio (the depth of the feeding section to the depth of the homogenizing section) play a crucial role in the uniformity of plasticization. A feed section that is too shallow (resulting in a lower compression ratio) will reduce production and cause screw slippage due to underfeeding. Suppliers of various resins generally have recommended optimal compression ratios for injection molding materials. Failure of the non-return ring (one-way valve) can also cause the screw to slip. When the screw is rotating and plasticizing the material, the non-return ring should be in the front (open) position, contacting the retaining ring seat. If the non-return ring is in the rearward (closed) position, or in a position between forward and rearward, the molten polymer will resist passing through the gap between the non-return ring and the ring seat. If you suspect that there is a problem with the non-return ring, it should be replaced immediately.</p>
<p><strong>Note: </strong><em>Because of the different plastic raw materials, the compression ratio is different.</em></p>
<p> The resin feed hopper can also be the cause of slippage in many injection molding screws. Proper hopper design is key to ensuring consistent material delivery, but is often overlooked. Generally speaking, new pellets of uniform size work well in square hoppers (sudden narrowing at the bottom) with abrupt compression zones. However, this is not the case when regenerative feed is added. The shape and size of the re-grinded pellets are very inconsistent, which will affect the uniformity of the feed. Feed incoherence means that the screw cannot maintain uniform delivery pressure on the melt, resulting in slippage. To solve this problem, and to resolve the size difference between regrind and virgin pellets, try using a round hopper involving a gentle compression zone with a gentle gradient at the bottom.</p>
<p><strong>3. Material uniformity</strong></p>
<p>As mentioned above, the shape and size of the material particles will affect the consistency of the feed. Poor pellet shape can cause poor screw processability, output fluctuations, and screw slippage. The pellets with uniform shape can be packed together more closely in the feeding section of the screw. The closer the pellets are packed together in the screw, the more time the material has to melt and move forward in the screw. Poorly shaped pellets will have more free volume (lower bulk density or more vacuum space between pellets) and feed difficulties, causing screw slippage. Raising the temperature of the rear section of the barrel can make the material start to melt faster, and the melt flow can obtain greater compressibility.</p>
<p>When processing hygroscopic materials such as nylon, moisture can also cause the screw to slip. Improper material drying will significantly reduce the viscosity of the material in the barrel and generate water vapor, making it difficult for the screw to convey the material forward. The moisture content of the pellets should be measured with a hygrometer at the bottom of the drying hopper and compared to the readings recommended by the material supplier. </p>

<p>And we need to set suitable speed and pressure for the machine,which is allowed to reach during die protection. In general, we are concerned to slow down the holding of the die during this period and set the pressure low enough so that if something gets in the way of the half die, the die will stop the jig motion and emit a jig alarm.</p>
